Driver Requirements Include:

Age & Experience: Must be 21 or older with at least three (3) years of caregiving experience and a valid state driver’s license held for a minimum of three (3) years. References must be verifiable.

Driving Record: No more than two (2) moving violations in the past three (3) years; no DUI in the last seven (7) years.

Background Check: Must pass comprehensive screenings including:

  • National Sex Offender Registry
  • Multi-state/multi-jurisdiction criminal background check (via Checkr)
  • DOJ/FBI criminal record check (via Live Scan)
  • Motor Vehicle Report (via Checkr)

Legal Standing: No convictions of felonies or serious/violent misdemeanors.

Health & Safety Compliance: Must pass a TB test (if required), OHS DOT Physical, Breath Alcohol Test, and 7-Panel DOT Drug Test.

Company Policies: Must sign zero-tolerance agreements for:

  • Tobacco, drug, and alcohol use
  • Illegal mobile device use while driving

Enrollment: Must enroll in DMV’s Employee Pull Notice (EPN) program.

Professional Standards: Must wear branded uniforms and display a Unified company photo ID badge.

Every Unified driver is trained in:

Passenger Interaction & Support: Training to build trust, foster inclusion, and support riders with diverse mobility and learning needs, including sensitivity and SEL (social-emotional learning) strategies.

Special Needs & Equipment: Instruction on assisting passengers with dementia, using wheelchair securements, and operating adaptive devices.

Safety & Emergency Response: Emergency preparedness, mandatory reporting, and recognizing/responding to bullying, abuse, and other safety concerns.

Behavior Management: De-escalation techniques and strategies for handling behavioral challenges with compassion.

Driving & Road Safety: Defensive driving and passenger assistance training to ensure safe and reliable transport.

All Unified vehicles are 2019 or newer and undergo a 19-point inspection annually. Our fleet is built for safety, comfort, and real-time coordination.
